Chief Engineer

JOB SUMMARY
Coordinate, manage and supervise engineering and maintenance, staffs. Responsible for all maintenance and repairs of NOMA’s Facilities to include HVAC and Central Plant Equipment, fire pump, backup generator, all public areas, exterior areas of building, exhibit halls and offices.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Maintain daily oversight and coordination of engineering, and maintenance staffs particularly as it relates to the central plant, building systems and public areas of the Museum and Facilities.
  • Develop and maintain engineering and maintenance staff work schedules, ensuring proper coverage of facilities during all shifts and events.
  • Assists in interviewing, hiring and training of engineering and maintenance personnel.
  • Maintain and repair all NOMA Areas in accordance with all federal and state building regulations and museum standards.
  • Work with the Building Facility Manager, curators and registrar to develop and maintain proper procedures to ensure the safety of the collection.
  • Respond to all emergency calls within predetermined response time periods.
  • Responsible for general maintenance of entire facilities, both inside and out. This entails assessment of routine maintenance as well as long term issues.
  • Maintain all documents and records related to equipment maintenance, logs, worksheets and work orders.
  • Perform in house employee training on the safe operation, use, and maintenance of equipment and building systems.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborates with Museum staff on projects and initiatives as it relates to the building
  • Report any unusual finding or safety hazards immediately to the Facilities Manager
  • Review the shift engineer’s check lists and report any abnormalities.
  • Ordering and stock maintenance of all necessary tools, parts, materials and supplies.
  • Maintain training records.
  • Understands and practice NOMA emergency fire procedures.
  • Maintain safe conditions in work area and other associated areas.
  • Walk NOMAs facilities to determine maintenance needs.
  • Coordinate and assist internal/external customers during events and programs.
  • May undertake special projects as requested by Director, Assistant Director for Finance and Administration or the Facilities Manager
  • Perform other duties as requested.

  • Maintenance Engineers
  • Maintenance Staff
  • Indirectly supervise museum building support contractors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Local Stationary Engineer First Class License.
  • High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Vocational background in building maintenance or apprenticeship in general building maintenance, HVAC and mechanical, electrical, plumbing etc fields.
  • One year experience as a Chief Engineer or five years experience as a maintenance engineer working in an engineering environment.

  • Excellent managerial and supervising skills
  • Excellent knowledge of building systems, HVAC, electric, mechanic, etc Good verbal, listening and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.

  • Proficiency with computers.
  • Good decision making abilities
  • Good organizational and time management skill
  • Able and willing to work with staff and consultants
  • Excellent knowledge in the operation of Physical Plant Equipment i.e.: Boilers, chillers, pumps, air handling equipment, etc.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain HVAC and Refrigeration Equipment.
  • Read and understand blueprints.
  • Perform basic plumbing work.
  • Work in and around the public, visitors, and fellow employees in a positive and professional manner.
  • Interact positively with Visitors and fellow employees.
  • Adapt to priority changes of work flow
  • Ability to think clearly under high pressure or in emergency situations
  • Prioritize and assign tasks to staff for completion in timely manner.
  • Perform duties without direct supervision.
  • Ability to safely and properly use hand and power tools.
  • Ability to perform all duties in a team environment in a safe and orderly manner.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Position requires significant physical activities
  • Lifting in excess of 50 pounds
  • May be required to travel by car from sites
