New Orleans Museum of Art makes family-friendly spot

It's Friday after work and you and your kids want to kick off the weekend right. Why not head to the New Orleans Museum of Art's weekly "Where Y'Art?!" The museum keeps its doors open each Friday from 5 to 9 p.m., so folks can attend lectures and view exhibits. But the museum also knows how to kick up its heels as well, with live music and hands-on workshops that let children create their own art.
Friday night's (Feb. 24) art-making activity will be led by KIDsmART, a local organization that focuses on linking the arts with academics. Past activities have included making books and frames. Art-making activities are from 5 to 8 p.m.
Children also might enjoy listening - and dancing - to Friday night's live music, folk-rock band The Acadias, which plays until 8:30 p.m.
Not every NOMA exhibit will grab the attention of an energetic child, but Friday night, little ones might get a kick out of “Wayne Gonzales: Light to Dark/Dark to Light,” which closes on Sunday.
If the weather cooperates, Grace Wilson, director of communications and marketing, recommends letting kids burn off energy in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, located in City Park adjacent to NOMA. The outdoor garden features 63 sculptures from around the world.
Friday night's lectures are: "Maya Apocalypse Soon?" by Anthony F. Aveni at 6 p.m., followed at 7:15 by a lecture on New Orleans photographer Arthur P. Bedou by Mora Beauchamp-Byrd, assistant professor of art history at Xavier University.
Admission to the museum is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, university students and active military members, and $6 for children ages 7-17. Children 6 and younger are free. The sculpture garden is free and open daily.
