'A Streetcar Named Desire' Launches Outdoor Movie Series

With spring seemingly on the verge of springing, the New Orleans Museum of Art and New Orleans Film Society on Friday (March 9) re-launch the outdoor screening series they introduced last year. And their choice for the first movie on tap is, in a word, “Stella-arrrrrr.”
That film: director Elia Kazan’s Oscar-winning 1951 adaptation of that New Orleansy-est of Tennessee Williams stories, “A Streetcar Named Desire.”
The “Streetcar” screening, as with all the movies on tap in the series, will be held in the museum’s Besthoff Sculpture Garden. It will be preceded at 5 p.m. by music, art activities and food, with the movie rolling at 7 p.m.
No outside food or drink will be permitted, although attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or chair to sit on.
Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for members of the museum and film society, and free for children 17 and under.
The series will continue on the second Friday of every month through June 8. The schedule:
1971’s “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” on April 13; 1961’s “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” on May 11; and 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz” on June 8.
