Museum Shop Featured Artist
Each month the Museum Shop features a local artist of the month. All works by local artists are tax free thanks to the Louisiana Cultural Districts program.
April’s featured artist is Gerald Haessig. Haessig has a degree in communications but after fourteen years of working in local TV news, he left the industry in 1999 to pursue a full time art career. This transformation started in 1992 when his wife gave him a glassblowing lesson as a Christmas present. From there, he branched out to other mediums.
Working in glass, clay and jewelry design, Mr. Haessig was commissioned by Brock Elementary in Slidell, LA to create a ceramic vessel and silver pendant presented to First Lady Michelle Obama on her visit to the school. In 2006, First Lady Laura Bush was presented with a piece of jewelry he created for the Historic New Orleans Collection. He designed works for Save Our Cemeteries and the Louisiana Garden Club Federation. He was most recently commissioned to create ceramic awards for the producers of the HBO series Treme.
He appeared on HGTV’s Crafters Coast to Coast and has been published in Studio PMC, a quarterly publication highlighting the technique he developed for fusing pure silver onto raku fired pottery.
Haessig is member of the Louisiana Craftsmen Guild and the Dutch Alley Artist’s Co-op. His work is in galleries, museum stores and gift shops throughout the country.
